There are many wonderful readers and textbooks available to learners, but more is always welcome. Ideally, one would like chances to hear and speak Latin, but it is primarily a literary language in the 21st century. The surest road to proficiency in Latin is through extensive reading. Studying a language as different from English as Latin is opens the mind to the possibilities of language, improving writing and language learning skills. Students who study Latin perform better on standardized tests by substantial margins. Most of the words in English find their ultimate origin in Latin, so Latin is useful for vocabulary building. Of course the ancient Romans left us many wonderful works of literature, but it would be a shame to forget the great books of the middle ages and renaissance, most of which are also in Latin.įor some, Latin is practical.
